The Republic of Dreams is a project by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in partnership with the Goethe-Institut in Warsaw and Muzeum Literatury. The work will be presented during the opening hours of the History Meeting House.

Schulz’s work escapes unequivocal interpretations and his style, filled with anachronisms, regionalisms and metaphors, is hardly a subject to be easily translated into other languages. This collection of oneiric experiences allowing us to enter a universe filled with fantasies, lush imagery or outlandish scenes was the starting point for Mika Johnson, who explains: “Schulz can be a great guide to our dreams and childhood memories. The writer reminds us that imagination is an unrestricted sphere and dreaming or immersing oneself in vast universes of inner visions can be the source of not only comfort, but also pleasure”.

Schulz has created a timeless space that to this day shapes and engages audiences. The authors of the project call this space the Republic of Dreams, and they invite the audience, including those unfamiliar with the author’s work, into this space. Multimedia projections, ambient music, video and sound works make up this immersive installation and encourage the audience to plunge into the world of dreams and imagination.

The presentation at History Meeting House will be accompanied by a launch of the project’s new website including compositions by sound designers Eli Stine and Jackson Bierfeldt, music by Wacław Zimpel and AWALI, a video by Jakub Krejči and excerpts from Bruno Schulz’s writings read by actresses Olga Mikulska and Julie Gibson Josephson and accompanied by Marta Lissowska’s illustrations. English versions of Schulz’s writings were translated by Celina Wieniewska.
