The book is dedicated to MDM (the Marszałkowska Residential District) in Warsaw and KMA (Karl Marx Allee) in Berlin, two flagship examples of post-war architecture, which were subject to the principles of socialist realism, from the urban planning and architectural form to the selection of details.
The architectural compounds were built in different countries, yet, the similarities here in layout, architectural form, style and decor are striking. Urban space, organized in line with the principles of socialist realism, was meant to convey the power of the regime as well as communist ideas. The album and the exhibition were presented as part of a programme marking Poland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and commemorating 20 years of partnership between Warsaw and Berlin.
