Not only is this album special thanks to its author, a well-known Berlin press photographer from the Weimar Republic era, but it is also extraordinary due to the picture of Warsaw an its residents over 90 years ago. They are unique photographs. Perfectly preserved glass negatives are one of the few testimonies of Warsaw residents‘ daily life during the First World War. It is a valuable record presenting the history of the city as it was regaining its status of a capital city. The iconographic part of the album was preceded by historical texts written by specialists in Warsaw history: Tomasz Markiewicz‘s text on Warsaw during the First World War and Jan Jagielski’s commentary on Jewish residents of the capital city. Willy Römer’s profile is introduced by professor Diethart Kerb, a historian specializing in the history of photography in the Weimar Republic period.
