It was constantly changing and evolving and marked by contrasts – from the modern and beautiful architecture of Śródmieście to the more down-at-heel areas of Powiśle, Czerniaków and the Northern District.

The album ‘A City Regained’ is more of a photographic essay than a chronicle about Warsaw. We present photographs courtesy of the Polish National Digital Archives, taken by Polish precursors of photojournalism, outstanding pre-war photographers working for ‘Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny’ (‘The Illustrated Daily Courier’) publishing house.
