We invite you to take a leisurely walk around Warsaw during the Second Polish Republic and have a closer look at the street life in this bustling atmosphere. As inter-war Warsaw had just regained its independence after 123 years of partition rule, the city was still searching for its new identity.

It was constantly changing and evolving and marked by contrasts – from the modern and beautiful architecture of Śródmieście to the more down-at-heel areas of Powiśle, Czerniaków and the Northern District.
The album ‘A City Regained’ is more of a photographic essay than a chronicle about Warsaw. We present photographs courtesy of the Polish National Digital Archives, taken by Polish precursors of photojournalism, outstanding pre-war photographers working for ‘Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny’ (‘The Illustrated Daily Courier’) publishing house.
